Halo 3 info
Get ready to lock and load. The Halo 3 Beta is upon us. Wondering how the weapon list has changed? Wonder no longer. We've got info and screens for each gadget, grenade, and gun in the game. The old favorites are back along with a few new soon-to-be classics.
The X Button has a new function in Halo 3: gadgets. These pickups greatly change the pace of the game when someone finds and deploys one. There are only four in the beta. How many more will be added in the final Halo 3 release is anyone's guess.
Portable Grav Lift
Once tossed on the ground, this device will boost anybody that steps onto it high into the air. Perfect for reaching high perches or scaling walls in objective based games, these guys are a nice tactical tool.
Verdict: This tool is a huge boost in High Ground, which sports a door that walls off the upper base from invaders. Of course, if you can get inside you can push a button to open the door. With a grav lift, getting inside is no problem.
Bubble Shield
The Bubble Shield looks awesome. Wherever it is tossed, a domed force field appears around it, protecting whoever sits inside. They won't roll down hills as they did in a previous Bungie trailers, but they do produce some of the nicest effects around. Gunfire can't penetrate the shield, but anybody can walk through it. The field acts just like a wall when grenades are concerned. Spike grenades stick in and the rest bounce off. When the Bubble Shield runs out of juice, it explodes. This tool isn't all nice, we guess.
Verdict: The Bubble Shield is too cool for school. Seriously. We love it.
Power Drainer
The antithesis of the Bubble Shield, the Power Drainer creates an orb of death. Anybody that touches it will find death. Great for blocking off halls or tricking folks that think a Bubble Shield is on the way, this gadget feels like a long lasting and contained grenade.
Verdict: We haven't seen this used as effectively as the other two tools, but it has potential. We just need to see it in the right hands.
Trip Mine
Here's the situation: A Warthog is barreling towards you. It doesn't have anyone at the gun, so the driver's only option is to run you over. But you have a Trip Mine. You drop one of these on the ground and anything that runs over it or steps on it is toast. Trip Mines make a loud beeping that can be heard by anybody strolling by as a warning, so you'll rarely catch the pedestrian types.
Verdict: The Trip Mine feels more like a gimmick than anything you'll put to great use. Drop it down in the center of a map and you'll occasionally get a kill from some unsuspecting driver. We'll take it but we aren't amazed.
Assault Rifle
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Grip: Two handed
Description: The Assault Rifle was removed from Halo 2, but now it's back and badder than ever. The Assault Rifle is your standard point and click weapon, with a moderately large ammo clip. It's a strong choice for short to medium range battles. In all three beta maps, this gun is the default weapon, forcing players to seek out two weapons if they want to dual wield. So far, this means a lot less people are running around with two weapons up.
Verdict: We missed this guy in Halo 2. Welcome back!
Battle Rifle
First appeared: Halo 2
Grip: Two handed
Description: The Battle Rifle is a good long range alternative to the Assault Rifle. With a zoomed scope and nice, accurate bursts of fire, the Battle Rifle is a favorite on open maps that require you to engage your opponent at a distance. The feel of the Battle Rifle in the Halo 3 beta is roughly the same as it was in Halo 2
Verdict: Feels like a broken in pair of jeans.
Sniper Rifle
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Grip: Two handed
Description: The Sniper Rifle is one of the most coveted and deadliest weapons in the Halo universe. The two levels of zoom and single shot kill ability of this weapon make it fearsome indeed. The Sniper Rifle in the Halo 3 beta is similar to the what you saw in Halo 2 with the notable addition of a LCD screen that shows a infrared view of what the scope sees even when you don't have it pulled up to your face.
Verdict: Sniping chumps in Valhalla as they fly off the man canon is a thing of beauty.
Rocket Launcher
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Grip: Two handed
Description: The Rocket Launcher has been around since the beginning and it's always been the weapon of choice for people who want easy kills. The Rocket Launcher only appears in one place in the beta and it isn't easily obtained or held onto thanks to its locale. People don't tend to use vehicles much on this map, High Ground, so it's tough to tell whether the rocket still locks on to vehicles. Whether it does or not, the Halo 3 beta rockets feel a bit slower moving than previous Halo games. The explosion is still one to behold though.
Verdict: We need to see the Rocket Launcher in an open level with Warthogs before we can pass judgement.
Shotgun
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Grip: Two handed
Description: The weapon of choice for close combat, the Shotgun fails at long range in a most unsatisfying way. There haven't been any significant changes in the Shotgun's design or performance in the move from Halo 2 to Halo 3. That means it isn't as overpowered as it was in Halo: Combat Evolved. Still, you could do much worse than to have a Shotgun in hand while running through the underground of Snowbound.
Verdict: We stopped using this weapon regularly in Halo 2 and the time we spent with it in the Halo 3 beta isn't doing much to change our mind.
SMG
First appeared: Halo 2
Grip: One handed
Description: The Sub Machine Gun is largely obsolete with the reintroduction of the Assault Rifle. The SMG was often a starting weapon in Halo 2 multiplayer and was quickly teamed with a Plasma Pistol for maximum damage. It is, however, underpowered by itself. Think of the SMG like a sorry, one-handed cousin to the Assault Rifle.
Verdict: Snore.
Turret
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Grip: Two handed
Description: Although the human turret first appeared in the original Halo, this is nothing like your father's stationary gun. The human chain gun can now be detached from its base and carried around Serious Sam style. The camera pulls back to a third-person view when this baby is in hand and Master Chief is forced to slow his pace to a leisurely stride. You won't be as mobile as everyone else, but being a slow tank isn't bad.
Verdict: Seeing Master Chief in third-person is weird. Plus, what's up with his animation while carrying the chain gun?
Missile Pod
First appeared: Halo 3 Beta
Grip: Two handed
Description: Oh. My. God. The Missile Pod is the answer to everyone's dreams of an even stronger weapon than the Rocket Launcher. With 8 missiles in the chamber, the Pod is not to be messed with. Like the chain gun turret, Master Chief has to slow down his pace and can't jump as far while carrying this guy. Still, the ability to home in on vehicles makes this one scary weapon.
Verdict: This is one very welcome addition.
Spartan Laser
First appeared: Halo 3 Beta
Grip: Two handed
Description: The Spartan Laser has been the talk of the internet message boards ever since images of it first were shown by Bungie. This two-handed weapon requires a charging period before you can actually unleash the massive laser blast. One shot is enough to take out anything in its path, including vehicles. If you see the tracer lined up on your head, get out of the way before the Spartan Laser can fire. If you don't, you're toast.
Verdict: Tastes like burning. Sweet, sweet burning.
Plasma Pistol
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Grip: One handed
Description: The Plasma Pistol became the "bitch" weapon of Halo 2 when everyone realized it couldn't miss and dropped shields to nothing instantly. Not so anymore. You can still dual wield with it and it still drops the shields, but the tracking capabilities of the Plasma Pistol are not what they were in Halo 2. At medium range, it still will track your target even if you aim wide but it doesn't feel like it has as long of a reach as before. As such, we haven't run into too many folks on the beta dual wielding this guy.
The best new addition to the Plasma Pistol is that it can melt metal. This shows up in environmental visual effects, but it can also paralyze vehicles.
Verdict: Thank you Bungie for toning the tracking down a notch.
Plasma Rifle
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Grip: One handed
Description: The Plasma Rifle was quite a force in Halo: Combat Evolved thanks to its knack for stunning anyone caught in the stream of shots. This feature was removed in Halo 2 and it's still gone in the beta. Sad. You can still dual wield the Plasma Rifle, if you care to.
Verdict: Pass.
Carbine
First appeared: Halo 2
Grip: Two handed
Description: The Carbine is the Covenant's answer to the Battle Rifle. With a single level of zoom and a high rate of fire, the Carbine is powerful in the hands of someone with a good skill at making head shots. It isn't automatic, though, which makes many pass on its subtle strength. The Carbine looks and behaves almost identically to the Halo 2 version.
Verdict: Sure, we'll take it.
Needler
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Grip: Two handed
Description: The Needler has been a big joke in multiplayer games throughout the history of Halo. It's tracking ability hasn't ever made up for it's slow rate of fire and weak shot strength. But that was the old Needler. The Halo 3 beta Needler can't be dual wielded anymore. To make up for it, this Needler is strong. The tracking won't work over long distances, but at medium range the new Needler is actually effective.
Verdict: Finally, a Needler worth a look.
Beam Rifle
First appeared: Halo 2
Grip: Two handed
Description: The Beam Rifle performs similarly to the human Sniper Rifle. It has the same amount of zoom and does a similar amount of damage. The only real difference is the Beam Rifle's lack of reload time which is swapped for a penchant for overheating. The Halo 3 beta Beam Rifle feels just like the Halo 2 one.
Verdict: Beware of head shots.
Spiker
First appeared: Halo 3 beta
Grip: One handed
Description: With two blades on the bottom and a rapid rate of fire, the Spiker is big on flash. By itself, the Spiker can't do a whole lot of damage. It isn't super accurate nor does it do a lot of damage. Dual wield this guy to make it worth your while.
Verdict: We like the look but aren't sure on how much we'll use the Spiker just yet.
Brute Shot
First appeared: Halo 2
Grip: Two handed
Description: The Brute Shot fires off what are essentially small grenades at a nice rate. Most people ignored this puppy in favor of something more powerful and we're inclined to think they did the right thing. The Halo 3 Brute Shot fires a little faster than what we're used to, but it still doesn't do enough damage to make it a worthwhile weapon
Verdict: The Brute Shot is on the right path. It's not there yet, though.
Notable omissions: The human Pistol is nowhere to be found. Nor is the Plama Sword. Where's my pistol?!?!!!
Grenades have been made much more effective in the Halo 3 beta, making dual wielding even less necessary. You can carry two of each of the three available types for a maximum of six bundles of death at a time. The left bumper cycles through your grenade type.
Frag Grenade
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Description: The standard frag grenade has a timed explosion allowing it to bounce about before detonating. The frag grenade feels a little more powerful in the Halo 3 beta than it was in Halo 2, but it still isn't as strong as what we had in Halo: Combat Evolved.
Verdict: The old favorite is still a favorite.
Spike Grenade
First appeared: Halo 3 beta
Description: The Brute grenade is a new addition to the Halo universe and it's already produced some great moments. The Spike Grenade will stick into whatever it first hits, be it human, ground, wall, or ceiling. You can also shoot it once you've tossed it to immediately detonate is and use it more as a trap than a standard grenade. Sticking one on a wall as someone walks around a corner always puts a smile on your face.
Verdict: We wish we could carry more than two.
Plasma Grenade
First appeared: Halo: Combat Evolved
Description: The Covenant grenade will bounce off of walls but will stick to anything that lives. The new look of the explosion is impressive even in the unfinished beta. Aside from having more flash, the plasma grenade hasn't changed much from Halo 2.
Verdict: Bright plasma explosions are as hypnotic as a lava lamp.
